DIY scrubs and lotions are fun, and they can help you feel like a thrifty goddess. Your tan will last longer and your skin will thank you for all that pampering when you regularly exfoliate and moisturize. But Tan Unique has got your back, too. The VersaSpa sunless tanning offered at our salon will have you feeling like a green goddess (go from thrifty to green)! The pre-tanning and post-tanning treatments provide you skin with aloe, DHA, soy proteins, and soothing botanicals. Plants aren’t just easy on the eyes, they also nourish your skin!

Hydrated, healthy skin is essential for getting the most out of your sunless tanning. The pH balancing skin prep treatment in the VersaSpa uses a blend of green tea extracts and amino acids. These ingredients balance and condition skin, which will give that even tan you desire. Selecting the treatment isn’t difficult, either. You choose your glow. Technology is amazing, and our booth talks you through your options while providing visual instructions. Customize your tan and experience with four different tanning levels, plus your nourishing treatments. All skin types welcome.

After you step into our warm booth and select your first two treatments, the final step is your post-tanning! VersaSpa offers a super hydrating treatment blend of skin soothing botanicals, soy proteins, green tea extracts and other professional-grade ingredients. It diminishes fine lines and deepens the beautiful color of your sunless tan. Seal in that moisture and keep your tan lasting longer!

We strive to provide a relaxing experience. Did your heated, specialized treatment remind you of a spa? Perfect. Do you feel pampered, your skin rejuvenated, and your glow restored? Excellent.  Whether you are tanning in our traditional beds, or you chose VersaSpa sunless tanning, keeping your skin nourished is important. During the winter and after some tanning sessions, skin has a tendency to dry out, keeping your skin healthy maintains your glow. In a continued spirit of DIY, check out our scrub recipes on the last blog, we found a few great recipes for lotion bars you can make at home! Scrubs and lotion bars call for some of the same ingredients -- make a day of it (or an afternoon) and beat the cold and rain with some warm activities: tanning and DIY projects to keep that skin soft and nourished.

Lavender Lotion Bars (recipe courtesy of “Pink When” blog)

  • 1/4 cup Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
  • 1/4 cup Shea Butter
  • 1/4 cup 100% ORGANIC Beeswax
  • 1/4 tsp Vitamin E Oil
  • Lavender essential oil

You’ll need to have silicone molds ready, I had some cute ones I picked up from Target, but some folks pour into small canning jars, too. Next, melt the coconut oil, Shea butter, and beeswax together. You can use smaller amounts, just make sure you measure each out equally. Most people melt them together using a bowl over hot water. Stir in the Vitamin E oil.  Let it cool for just a minute and then grab your essential oil. I put in at least 15 drops of the oil and then poured into my molds. Let it cool!

This next tutorial shows a different recipe, getting your fancy on, with grapefruit and lavender oil!

I make lotion bars almost every winter. They last, keep my skin soft, and smell amazing. I make plenty so I can gift and share!

Keep your skin hydrated in between your tanning sessions! Ready to book your next appointment?  Please call (479) 785-1185 to make an appointment or visit us at our salon on 4500 Rogers Ave. Walk-ins are welcome!

The luxury of tanning in a salon not only gives your skin that gorgeous glow, but also boosts your spirits and helps you de-stress. In past blogs we’ve discussed skin care. It’s no secret that skin looks best with that nourished look of a tan + moisturizer, but before a tan it’s best to exfoliate. There’s some science behind that: removing dead skin cells leaves your skin looking healthier and your tan lasting longer.

Some people like to invest in exfoliation products, but there are those of you who love Pinterest-ing. We reviewed top Pinterest boards on homemade exfoliation and found great recipes you mix at home!

girl on beach

It’s still pretty cold out, but this is the time to work on getting ready for those hot summer days: hit the gym, the tanning salon, and try some fun new trends. The last blog introduced you to contouring with makeup, after establishing a beautiful foundation with a glowing tan. This blog takes contouring that foundation one step further: body contouring. Just like contouring with makeup, body contouring highlights the areas you want to show off and helps to downplay those areas we all prefer to ignore (ahem, cellulite). They say (you know, the experts) body contouring is the next big trend. We decided to see how it works and let you in on your choices if experimenting with contouring sounds like a fun way to pass the winter days.

smiling girl

Your winter look perked up quite a bit with that new hair and that new tan, right? But your makeup might need a color switch. You’ll probably invest in some new foundation at the very least. Don’t throw out your old color just yet, especially if it’s a foundation stick! See if you can repurpose any of it for the big beauty trend: contouring.

Girl with Pink Hair

After the lights and excitement of the winter holidays fade, January and February stretch on into cold, drab days. A stint in the tanning bed or a session with spray-on tanning can brighten the cloudy months. What goes better with a healthy glow than a pop of hair color (aside from a new outfit)? How do you decide what color best suits your skin tone?

girl on boy's back

Dress to impress by following these few simple guidelines in determining what color goes best (and worst) with your skin tone.

Fair Complexions

What To Wear: If you have fair Type 1 or 2 skin, it can make getting and keeping a tan difficult (Read our blog on Finding Your Skin Type here). We recommend wearing bold solid colors to bring out the warmer tones in your skin. If you want to better set off your complexion, try wearing bright colors like hot pink or canary yellow. Lighter skin tones tend to fall in the cooler shades of skin undertones (blue/pink based tones). Warmer colors will also compliment your skin, such as peach or tan colors.

What NOT To Wear: People with Type 1 or 2 skin should never dress in solid black or white. It completely drains any color you could potentially squeeze out of your complexion.

Medium Complexions

What To Wear: If you have a medium complexion (Type 3 or 4 skin) then you should look for more earthy colors, such as green, gold, reds, oranges, etc. Neutral colors such as cream and taupe are also good for enhancing the gorgeous caramel color of people with medium complexions.

What NOT To Wear: Since people with a medium skin type tend to have a warm undertone, we recommend avoiding any cool colors. Too many pastels are guaranteed to make your skin take on a grayish tinge.

Dark Complexions

What To Wear: Dark complexions (Type 5 or 6 skin) look fantastic in pastels and bright whites. Dark colors are also flattering, although you should have more jewel tones, such as emerald green or sapphire blue. Eggplant-purple, deep red, and gray are also great with setting off dark skin.

What NOT To Wear: Earthy colors such as brown, navy blue, or black don’t go particularly well with dark skin tones. These types of colors will wash you out and won’t do anything to enhance your dark complexion.

Pro Tip

If you particularly like a color that we advised against, don’t be afraid to use it as an accent piece! Go ahead and add some flair with a colorful pair of shoes, belt, scarf, or bag.

Blonde Girl Beside Lake

Many people make the mistake of choosing their clothes based off a specific season rather than their skin tone. Wintertime used to mean a lot of pasty complexions that went well with subdued colors. However, thanks to indoor tanning salons, people can sport their ideal beautiful bronzed glow all year round! So trying to make your wardrobe fit a seasonal theme really isn’t doing anyone any favors. That’s why it’s important to know which colors will complement you and which ones can wash you out.

By follow a few simple guidelines, we can help you determine which colors will help bring out your gorgeous tan, and leave you looking fantastic and feeling confident!

Determine Your Skin Undertone

The first step to finding the ideal color scheme for your wardrobe is to determine your skin undertone. People can usually be classified as having either a warm or cool undertone. Here are some fairly easy ways to tell which category your beautiful skin belongs to:

Paper Test: The easiest way to test your undertone would be to hold up a plain white sheet of paper to your face or arm and determine which color is most prominent; if your skin looks pink or blueish, then you have a cool skin tone. If your skin looks yellowish, orangeish, or even greenish then you have a warm skin tone.

Veins Check Test: Check the underside of your wrist and determine which color your veins most closely resembles. Blue or purple veins belong to cool undertones, while green or yellowish veins belong to warm undertones.

Jewelry Test: Use a bracelet or ring to determine what your skin undertone is. White or silver jewelry will compliment cool skin tones, while gold jewelry will look better on warm skin tones.

Once you’ve determined which skin undertone fits you the best, then you can move on to determining which warm shades or cool shades work with your overall skin type. For simplicities sake, warm tones tend to work better with earthy shades, while cool skin tones tend to work best with jewel tones or silver shades.

Girl in white on beach

Do you want that golden, just-spent-the-weekend-at-the-beach look? Tan Unique can help! Our VersaSpa Pro Heated Sunless Spa Booth delivers the best, natural-looking tan in just 10 minutes. With some simple spray tanning prep and aftercare it’s easy to achieve your ideal tan (and make it last).

Pre-Tan Prep

Getting ready for a big event? We recommend scheduling your spray tanning session two days beforehand to allow the spray solution time to fully develop (about 12-24 hours).

The morning of your session, make sure to scrub down, and gently exfoliate problem areas like your knees and elbows (the thicker skin there tends to absorb more tanning solution which turns these areas darker).

  • Pro Tip: We recommend putting a layer of lotion on your knees and elbows prior to your session. It’s an easy way to create a little bit of a barrier from too much spray tan solution collecting in these areas. You could also do the same for the soles of your feet and the palms of your hands for a more natural, sun-kissed look!

While we recommend that you shower and exfoliate beforehand, you shouldn’t shave for at least 12-24 hours prior to your session. The reason for this is twofold: When you shave, you’re taking off a layer of dead skin cells and making way for a fresh new layer of cells. This is ideal for baby-soft skin, but less than ideal with how DHA pigment (aka: the active ingredient in spray tanning solution) tends to react with newly exposed cells. It can cause slight irritation and redness, not unlike going without shaving cream before you shave or moisturizing afterwards. The other reason is that shaving directly before your session leaves your pores open and extra susceptible to the spray tan. When your pores close they trap the bronzing solution underneath, creating dark brown dots along your legs.

And lastly, wear loose dark clothing to your session to keep your spray tan from staining anything (although most spray tanning solutions are washable, it’s better safe than sorry).

VersaSpa Pro Heated Sunless Spa Booth

Tan Unique’s VersaSpa Pro Heated Sunless Spa Booth delivers a professional custom air brush tan with results that are consistent, personalized and flawless. Simply choose your color level (Glow, Light, Medium or Dark) and allow the booth’s Height Sensor Technology to ensure pinpoint accuracy, which means full coverage for any body type! VersaSpa also offers the option to upgrade your session with different skin care treatments and color boosts for legs or face. The booth is smart technology-enabled, and talks you through the simple process with added visual instructions.

Post-Tan

After your spray tan, the bronzing solution will still take time to develop, so it’s important that you don’t get wet. You might want to skip showering, exercising or swimming for at least the next 6-8 hours to prevent streaking.

Our VersaSpa Pro Heated Sunless Spa Booth delivers a tan that lasts up to 5 to 7 days. To keep it for as long as possible we suggest:

  • Don’t exfoliate excessively
  • Don’t shave very often
  • Moisturize after you shower to keep the tanning solution locked in!

Happy woman with Flower headband

The best tan starts with a silky smooth foundation. With a little effort you can get flawless looking skin in no time! Just follow these few simple tips that will leave your skin looking radiantly gorgeous:

Use a Cleanser

Getting a naturally smooth complexion starts with the daily use of cleaners. Cleansing your skin is essential to removing oil and impurities that build up throughout the day. It’s especially important to keep up a twice daily cleansing ritual for your face in order to clean out your pores and prevent breakouts.

This also helps to detoxify your body in order to get rid of the buildup in your pores that helps block UV rays from the melanin pigment in your skin, which can lead to discolored patches after tanning. A thorough cleanse keeps your skin soft and smooth while also priming your body to accept a more even color. That’s why it’s recommended that you always cleanse and exfoliate before your tanning sessions!

Using a sulfate-free cleanser is the best way to give your skin a more natural glow. Their rejuvenating properties penetrate deeper into the skin and provide a more thorough cleanse.

At Tan Unique, our line of VersaSpa products features a sulfate-free omega-enriched grapeseed oil clenser infused with a combination of green and brown marine algae. Marine algae has become a popular miracle ingredient in advanced skincare due to the similarity in the composition of human skin and algae skin, which is able to replenish itself even after being subjected to extreme environmental aggressors.

Salons are the best place to get the latest in professional skin care products with a variety of active ingredients.

Get a Flawless Face Tan

The delicate skin of your face has less melanin (the pigment that reacts with UV rays to darken your skin tone) than the rest of your body, which is why it can be notoriously difficult to tan. These are a few simple tricks to help keep the color on your face flawlessly even:

Don’t Wear Makeup – Make sure to remove your makeup before your tanning session. It interferes with the tanning process by creating a layer between your skin and the UV rays.

Customize Your Spray Tan – Spray tan booths have many customizable features. Our VersaSpa Pro sunless tanning booth allows our customers to upgrade their session to include color boosts for their legs or face.

Use Self-Tanner – Snap on some gloves and apply some self-tanner! Make sure to apply the product evenly in circular motions. Don’t leave out your ears or neck, apply a small amount of self-tanner to both using a cotton ball to ensure full coverage.

Pro Tip: Remember to rub Vaseline, chapstick, or conditioner over your eyebrows to protect from discoloration.

Use Bronzer – For a quick fix, we recommend using a liquid or powder bronzer. Using bronzer gives you the best control over how dark you want to go. It just takes a good eye to match your best color tone!

Be Good to Your Skin

The most important piece of advice we can give, is to be good to your skin. A healthy lifestyle and habitual skin care routine is the best way to keep your skin looking silky smooth and glowing!

The surest way to keep your skin beautifully supple is to supply it with what it needs. Make sure to moisturize daily and drink plenty of water. Apply a hydrating moisturizer right after a bath or shower, when the warm water causes your pours open up and allows for better absorption.

Pro Tip: A high quality moisturizer is a great way to get vitamins that need to be replenished daily. We recommend moisturizers that contain both vitamins C and E!

Pro Tip: Drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day will give your skin a more radiant glow!
