The other element of tanning that I hadn’t considered revolves around skincare. When tanning, it is important do two things: exfoliate and moisturize. I mean, we all do this to some extent in the shower, but to get the most out of your tanning, exfoliating beforehand and moisturizing afterwards is key. Exfoliating loosens and gets rid of the dead skin cells that would hold your tan but would soon be removed from your skin, causing your tan to fade far more quickly than it should. Moisturizing keeps your skin healthy, which is essential for optimal tanning -- and it just looks good.
Before tanning, remember to shower, shave, and exfoliate. If you have events, get your mani/pedi done first. You don’t want any exfoliating during your pampering to take off a layer of you tan. After your session in the VersaSpa booth, you can use products to maximize your tanning experience.
The VersaSpa Primer can intensify and develop your tan. At Tan Unique, some of the biggest sellers are VersaSpa products. The VersaSpa Body Wash and Exfoliator sells regularly. I asked why, and the young lady attending the front desk and the tanning beds answered that it has to do with keeping the tan on the skin. She explained that people buy cheaper products or other brands that have chemicals or ingredients in them which inhibit the tan from staying on during application. It is similar to going in to the booth with lotion on -- the tan cannot adhere because something is acting as a barrier between skin and spray. One customer's body wash caused this very reaction; VersaSpa has specific natural ingredients that nurture the tan and help it develop. These ingredients balance the pH and enhance the tan.
Before my VersaSpa tan, I had no real idea how any of the products worked, or how unique the VersaSpa booth and its formula are compared with other, less natural tanning booths or sprays. I received a great many compliments on my tan, and also how natural the color looked. I recommend the VersaSpa experience -- booth and products. Specifically, if you are looking to invest in a VersaSpa tan once or twice a week, invest in the Intensifying Primer and the Cleansing Body Wash & Exfoliator. There are other amazing products, but these two are pretty essential for achieving your maximum results.

I’m from the old school generation of girls who tanned outside in their backyards, or bought the bottle of self tanning lotion from the supermarket. We put lemon juice in our hair and brought out the bulky CD players of our time to listen to Mariah Carey and look through magazines, while we basked in the full sun after school and on weekends in spring. I never even thought about sunless tanning booths or spray-on tan until I began blogging for Tan Unique. Here’s my experience in a VersaSpa sunless tanning booth.
The first thing I’d like to point out is that everyone was extremely kind and thoughtful about my questions. I didn’t take notes, I’m such a nerd, but now I wish I had: Be sure to shower beforehand. Don’t wear makeup. Don’t wear lotion. I remembered those steps. What I didn’t remember was to wear loose-fitting clothing. I wore a beanie, skinny jeans, and a sweater -- not appropriate for sunless tanning. I couldn’t do anything about my attire, but the other aspect I’d forgotten was to put lotion on my hands before stepping into the booth. Fortunately, the attendant at the desk reminded me. The booth warmed up, I applied the lotion to my hands, hair net was secured (but not over my ears or forehead), and I stepped into the VersaSpa to begin my automated session. Like some sci-fi movie, the booth began telling me step-by-step how to proceed. Though odd, I appreciated it, because I was a little nervous. My posture had to be a certain way, my eyes needed to be closed, and so the awkwardness of being prompted to turn around, or move my feet, was a relief. The spray was a little weird, but it wasn’t cold. The warm drying process actually felt nice. It didn’t take long, and the overall effect looks natural.
For me, there was one wild card: the bronzer.
Let me reiterate, everyone was helpful and thorough in explanations and options. This bronzer issue was just a misunderstanding. When asked, I selected the bronzer, instead of the clear spray, specifically so I could discuss the options in the blog. I’m so glad I did.
My face looked like I’d rolled in mud or hadn’t fully washed off a volcanic ash mask. Or something. I panicked. I dressed myself, headed to the front, and asked, “What did I do wrong?”
“Nothing. That’s the bronzer -- so you leave with color. It’s perfectly normal.”
But I still had to teach. High school. The moral of the story is: don’t select the bronzer effect if you have a full day ahead of you. Go to tan at night: sleep, shower, and enjoy your new tan.
I absolutely recommend the spray tan. It’s quick, easy to understand, and if you don’t panic about a little bronzer, a completely fun experience. The tan is lovely, and it looks natural, too. I had several students run to the salon that evening because the overall tan was impressive and they had prom in a few days.
Stick around for the next blog, because I’ll discuss the products you can buy for your VersaSpa tan. Book an appointment with Tan Unique. It really is the cleanest beach in town.
A glittering gown. A gorgeous glow. It’s prom season. Showcase more than fabulous hair and killer shoes; your skin should compliment your ensemble on prom night. Let’s discuss your color choices and your tan:
Still looking for a dress? You can choose exactly how dark you want to go, and shop for an extremely tailored look. Here’s what you are in for:
There are exceptions to the rules, of course, and if you can break the rules and look fantastic, then you are a true artist! Prom is still a few weeks away, but regular visits to the tanning salon are an absolute must to maintaining whatever skin tone best suits your dress. A good idea is to come get a good base tan and then get a spray tan just before prom. Remember, after prom comes summer! The days of baring your arms and legs are only a few weeks away! Stop by or call, and we can help you with a schedule, show you our amazing specials, and you can see why we are the cleanest beach in town!
Nothing is simple anymore. Not even ordering a coffee is simple. Do you want a latte? Is it made with coconut milk or dairy? Do you want it dark and hot, like your tan? Days are packed with responsibilities, deadlines, and choices. This is one great benefit of tanning -- relaxing in warmth, escaping from all the noise of life. You’ll feel relaxed, refreshed, and lovely. Book a session, then grab yourself that skinny, lavender-vanilla latte and head for some more “you time.” A perfect addition to pampering yourself is having a manicure and pedicure. The next question is, out of all the choices, what color looks amazing with your tan?
It’s hard to go wrong with burning oranges, bright pinks, and deeply blushing corals. These colors evoke that beach sunset we’ve got hanging in our memories, and are sure to make your deep tan pop. Even darker shades of these colors can add some drama for fun summer nights.
Warm colors aren’t the only colors to stand out against a tan: light greens and blues offer a cool accent against the stunning sight of your glow. Try to look for kelly green, mint green, sky blue, or a color that catches the shades of the light patches of a tropical ocean.
Not all bathing beauties want to flash with color; sometimes a diva needs her subtle side to show. Remember that latte you were about to sip during your pedicure? Take a hint from those creamy colors: warm light browns, toasted pinks, caramels, and creams. These lovely colors can be seen all over the beach by looking at the sand, the color of shells, and now they can feature on your lovely hands and toes!
Whatever color you choose, it will be flattering against the beauty of you. Love yourself! Take the time to de-stress in one of our tanning beds, or in our warm, sunless VersaSpa tanning booth. Give yourself a mini spa day! Come see why we’re "The cleanest beach in town!"
DIY scrubs and lotions are fun, and they can help you feel like a thrifty goddess. Your tan will last longer and your skin will thank you for all that pampering when you regularly exfoliate and moisturize. But Tan Unique has got your back, too. The VersaSpa sunless tanning offered at our salon will have you feeling like a green goddess (go from thrifty to green)! The pre-tanning and post-tanning treatments provide you skin with aloe, DHA, soy proteins, and soothing botanicals. Plants aren’t just easy on the eyes, they also nourish your skin!
Hydrated, healthy skin is essential for getting the most out of your sunless tanning. The pH balancing skin prep treatment in the VersaSpa uses a blend of green tea extracts and amino acids. These ingredients balance and condition skin, which will give that even tan you desire. Selecting the treatment isn’t difficult, either. You choose your glow. Technology is amazing, and our booth talks you through your options while providing visual instructions. Customize your tan and experience with four different tanning levels, plus your nourishing treatments. All skin types welcome.
After you step into our warm booth and select your first two treatments, the final step is your post-tanning! VersaSpa offers a super hydrating treatment blend of skin soothing botanicals, soy proteins, green tea extracts and other professional-grade ingredients. It diminishes fine lines and deepens the beautiful color of your sunless tan. Seal in that moisture and keep your tan lasting longer!
We strive to provide a relaxing experience. Did your heated, specialized treatment remind you of a spa? Perfect. Do you feel pampered, your skin rejuvenated, and your glow restored? Excellent. Whether you are tanning in our traditional beds, or you chose VersaSpa sunless tanning, keeping your skin nourished is important. During the winter and after some tanning sessions, skin has a tendency to dry out, keeping your skin healthy maintains your glow. In a continued spirit of DIY, check out our scrub recipes on the last blog, we found a few great recipes for lotion bars you can make at home! Scrubs and lotion bars call for some of the same ingredients -- make a day of it (or an afternoon) and beat the cold and rain with some warm activities: tanning and DIY projects to keep that skin soft and nourished.
You’ll need to have silicone molds ready, I had some cute ones I picked up from Target, but some folks pour into small canning jars, too. Next, melt the coconut oil, Shea butter, and beeswax together. You can use smaller amounts, just make sure you measure each out equally. Most people melt them together using a bowl over hot water. Stir in the Vitamin E oil. Let it cool for just a minute and then grab your essential oil. I put in at least 15 drops of the oil and then poured into my molds. Let it cool!
This next tutorial shows a different recipe, getting your fancy on, with grapefruit and lavender oil!
I make lotion bars almost every winter. They last, keep my skin soft, and smell amazing. I make plenty so I can gift and share!

The luxury of tanning in a salon not only gives your skin that gorgeous glow, but also boosts your spirits and helps you de-stress. In past blogs we’ve discussed skin care. It’s no secret that skin looks best with that nourished look of a tan + moisturizer, but before a tan it’s best to exfoliate. There’s some science behind that: removing dead skin cells leaves your skin looking healthier and your tan lasting longer.
Some people like to invest in exfoliation products, but there are those of you who love Pinterest-ing. We reviewed top Pinterest boards on homemade exfoliation and found great recipes you mix at home!

It’s still pretty cold out, but this is the time to work on getting ready for those hot summer days: hit the gym, the tanning salon, and try some fun new trends. The last blog introduced you to contouring with makeup, after establishing a beautiful foundation with a glowing tan. This blog takes contouring that foundation one step further: body contouring. Just like contouring with makeup, body contouring highlights the areas you want to show off and helps to downplay those areas we all prefer to ignore (ahem, cellulite). They say (you know, the experts) body contouring is the next big trend. We decided to see how it works and let you in on your choices if experimenting with contouring sounds like a fun way to pass the winter days.
Your winter look perked up quite a bit with that new hair and that new tan, right? But your makeup might need a color switch. You’ll probably invest in some new foundation at the very least. Don’t throw out your old color just yet, especially if it’s a foundation stick! See if you can repurpose any of it for the big beauty trend: contouring.
After the lights and excitement of the winter holidays fade, January and February stretch on into cold, drab days. A stint in the tanning bed or a session with spray-on tanning can brighten the cloudy months. What goes better with a healthy glow than a pop of hair color (aside from a new outfit)? How do you decide what color best suits your skin tone?
